In March of 2018, we will celebrate 15 years in business!! Many of you have been with me for this entire time and some even from the beginning of my career as a Massage Therapist in the early 80’s. Those of you who know my history may remember that I was influenced by a very special person early in my career. My aunt, Linda Brewer, was a pioneer in the spa industry. She opened one of the first day spas in Florida in 1976. I spent a summer with her in the 70’s, and she gave me facials to help clear my acne. I was hooked on this industry from then on!
Linda had a long and varied career in this field as a business owner, educator, Delegate to International Spa Associations and Symposiums, and ultimately became a spa consultant. She opened one of the first schools for estheticians in Florida and lobbied for Esthetician Licensing in that state. She blazed a trail for many of us in this industry.
In 2006, Linda was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. She wasn’t married and never had children, so she was fighting this battle alone. My sisters and I went to Jacksonville and brought her home. We cared for her until she passed away at the age of 59 on Feb. 12, 2007. One of Linda’s accomplishments was forming a non-profit to help those suffering from illnesses, such as cancer, by offering complimentary spa services. Unfortunately, she became ill before she could get the Uniquely-U concept into fruition. When I first heard of the Sparks of Light program, I immediately thought of my Aunt Linda. Throughout our 15 years in business, we have participated in many charity events, but this one is very special to me. I watched a vibrant, intelligent, successful woman be taken by this disease. I watched her fight and suffer the effects of chemo. I know what a caregiver is going through as well.
To honor my Aunt Linda and help offer comfort and relief to those going through cancer treatment, Serenity Spa is proud to be a participant in this year’s 3rd Annual Sparks of Light Day. Our staff will be donating their time and offering free services to those battling cancer. Please call us at 245-6484 to make an appointment. Participants will need to bring or send a doctor’s permission to have a massage or facial. You can send this to us at firstname.lastname@example.org
